Ready for spring? & Back to a Private Blog

It finally started. After a 6 year investigation, many (granted) motions for more time by the defense, and unexpected developments, Tad's case has finally moved on to trial. I honestly don't know that it is much better this way...Tad works 7 days a week, basically around the clock and will probably continue to do so until the end....but at least we're closer to the end. They say the trial will last about 2-3 months. We're trying to stay positive b/c at least it is the dead of winter. There isn't grass to mow, or the yard to landscape, or beautiful tempting days to take off and play with the family. We're also hopeful he won't see another case like this for the rest of his career. So this schedule has forced me to stay busy, realize that it isn't forever, and just be patient for spring. We are getting another winter storm today and tomorrow. It sure shuts down your chances of getting out of the house and running errands. I"ve slowly been tackling some over due projects like cleaning out the laundry room and closets. I guess I'm hoping to do a little spring cleaning before spring.

My friend Amanda had a creepy visit by a stranger on her blog. Many of us have checked out his site and it is too wierd w/ pictures of kids, many missing or abducted. So, I decided I should make our blog private again and keep it that way. Since we switched the settings allowing anyone, I've reconnected with many friends from the past and love it. However it isn't worth the chance of risking everyone's safety. I admit there are many blogs out there I read (mostly other Harding Alumni) that I don't comment on. There may be some of you reading this who are friends of friends and we might not even know you but that isn't who we're trying to keep away. So, if you want to be added to our list of readers add your email address in a comment or email us. Even if you are friends of friends, please feel free to stay with us. Rewind a little...

Okay so as I looked through the pictures on our computer I realized I never did go back and catch up from the fall. Tad's parents were able to come for a visit. The boys spent time in the backyard playing with MeMe and we all went around town for some short trips.

Then in Nov. we went to Arkansas for Harding's Homecoming. We had a wonderful time with my Aunt & Uncle in Little Rock and spent time on campus with our close friends Julie & Leslie and their families. Plus we saw several other friends. It was so fun to see what people are doing now, meet the people in their lives, and introduce Tad & the boys to everyone too. I'm so glad we made the trip even if it was a quick weekend.

For Thanksgiving we went to Missouri to visit all of Tad's family. This is our favorite time of the year to go home. Stephanie & Clark do a great job hosting Thanksgiving. We all help out in the kitchen and have way too much yummy food to eat. Stephanie is a gourmet cook....seriously she is amazing.

The tradition of the gingerbread...

One special thing about the holidays in Missouri is the tradition of the gingerbread. This tradition started way before I entered the Morris family. Every year the cousins make something out of REAL gingerbread. We bake with Martha Stewart's recipe. Laura (another sister in law) is our "record keeper" with a scrapbook of all the events. I've been able to see memories from the years I wasn't around and the ideas have been such a wide range from a traditional gingerbread house, to stained glass laterns. This year, every child had their own "house". Stephanie helped make everyone's creation. We had a grocery store, a barn, a dog house, a starbucks, a sleigh, and 2 cottages. Our family stayed at Stephanie's and with Laura's help we assembled all these creations. What a memory!!! Honestly it is a great tradition. I was surprised how much Connor & Peyton got into decorating theirs. We just made cottages for them. Connor would help Tad line his roof with gumdrops and then once he had a roof full he would take his hand and swipe the entire thing clean. Both boys were a mess when it was over and went straight to the bathtub but that is what it is all about. I'm so glad we do this.

I first learned about blogging through a blog for Max Julian. I went to college with Max's mom Kelly and when he was born there were complications shortly after birth. The blog started, pray warriors rallied, and many months later Kelly & John a beautiful boy Max in their arms at home. Then I learned about another blog for Baby Ethan Powell. Ethan has been struggling with Lukemia over at least the past year, but his blog has also connected many people through prayer and he continues to surprise the doctors although he is still in the fight.

Since then I started our family blog I have reconnected with many old friends from Harding, several I just found again this week. Blogs for prayer keep popping up. Suzanne, (also a Harding Alumni) had quads recently and that became a blog I visited frequently, and more recently Brent Adams (another Harding Alumni). But for the most part, I became a visitor on these blogs instead of blogging about them.

Tonight after I put my healthy boys to bed after a very long day, I picked up the local paper and read shocking news as my eyes filled up with tears. Tyler Alfriend, a 15 yr. old is fighting for his life after being diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitts Lymphoma There was a 1/2 page ad announcing a fundraiser at the Rec Center. It included his blog address and his picture.

Who is Tyler? Well, I had his brother Erik in my first grade class my first year teaching here in Dublin. The Alfriends were also new to the school system that year. Kathy, the boys' mom, was a great help. I had those first year jitters anyway around parents, wondering if they wished they had a more "experienced" teacher. The Alfriends were those parents that every teacher hopes to fill their room with. From the minute I met Kathy I was at ease. They have great kids, they support the school, trust the teacher, and you can just tell seeing them all interact, that they are a loving christian family. Kathy volunteered a lot in our room and even helped throw a wedding shower from the class for Tad & I. Erik is the youngest boy (among 4) so I never had anymore Alfriend children in my class, but I continued to talk with Kathy the following years. I lost touch with many families 2 yrs. ago when I quit teaching - theirs being one of them.

I just finished reading their blog and catching up on the past 60 days of struggle. My heart is so heavy. Today I thought I had a challenging day. Tad is working long hours (until March) because of this upcoming trial and comes in the door at 9:00. It all changes your perspective. Tad doesn't like working these long days and they are no picnic for me, but we will get through them no matter how long they last b/c we can and b/c there are people with real CHALLENGES and fights to fight. I will look at tomorrow much differently.

Please pray for Tyler & his family. If you can, please check out their blog too. I am linking it on the side here. They have many fund raisers planned from what I've read so far. I know this will be financially stressful as it is for many other families. Most importantly spread this among your prayer warriors and feel free to add yourself to their buddy mapping. I know they would appreciate seeing their map fill up with red dots like Ethan Powell's.

Flat Iron Dilemmas

Ok I need help from those of you using flat irons. I need to purchase a new one. I've read tons of reviews but I am more confused than before. The current salon I go to switched from the CHI to Paul Mitchell and said they think it is tons better. It also costs $160. I've seen the Paul Mitchell else where for about $130 and the Chi for as little as $80 up to $130 so what gives? Is it Salon Pricing or is it maybe not the same product?

The Next Survivor Series

I'm sure this is old, but I never read forwards so it was new to me. I got this forward from my sister-n-law and thought it was worth posting for everyone to get a laugh today. Enjoy!

THE NEXT SURVIVOR SERIES

Six married men will be dropped on an island with
one car and 3 kids each for six weeks.

Each kid will play two sports and either take music
or dance classes. There is no fast food.

Each man must take care of his 3 kids; keep his
assigned house clean, correct all homework, complete science projects,
cook, do laundry, and pay a list of "pretend" bills with not
enough money.

In addition, each man will have to budget in money for groceries each week.

Each man must remember the birthdays of all their
friends and relatives, and send cards out on time.

Each man must also take each child to a doctor's
appointment, a dentist appointment and a haircut appointment . He must
make one unscheduled and inconvenient visit per child to the Urgent
Care (weekend, evening, on a holiday or right when they 're about to
leave for vacation). He must also make cookies or cupcakes for a
social function.

Each man will be responsible for decorating his own assigned house,
planting flowers outside and
keeping it presentable at all times.

The men will only have access to television when the kids are asleep and
all chores are done.

Each father will be required to know all of the
words to every stupid song that comes on TV and the name of each and
every character on cartoons.

Each man will have to make
an Indian hut model with six toothpicks, a tortilla and one marker;
and get a 4 year old to eat a serving of peas.

Each man must adorn himself
with jewelry, wear uncomfortable yet stylish shoes, keep their nails
polished and eyebrows groomed. The men must try to get through each
day without snot, spit-up or barf on their clothing.

During one of the six weeks
(maybe even TWO), the men will have to endure severe abdominal cramps,
back aches, and have extreme, unexplained mood swings but never once
complain or slow down from other duties. They must try to explain what
a tampon is for when the 6-yr old boy finds it.

They must attend weekly
school meetings, church, and find time at least once to spend the
afternoon at the park or a similar setting.

He will need to read a book
to the children each night without falling asleep, and then feed them,
dress them, brush their teeth and comb their hair each morning by 7:00
. They must leave the home with no food on their face or
clothes.

A test will be given at the
end of the six weeks, and each father will be required to know all of
the following information: each child's birthday, height, weight, shoe
size, clothes size and doctor's name. Also the child's weight at
birth, length, time of birth, and length of labor, each child's
favorite color, middle name, favorite snack, favorite song, favorite
drink, favorite toy, biggest fear and what they want to be when they
grow up.

They must clean up after their sick children at 2:00
a.m. and then spend the remainder of the day tending to that child and
waiting on them hand and foot until they are better.

They must have a loving, age
appropriate reply to, "You're not the boss of
me."

The kids vote them off the island based on
performance. The last man wins only if...he still has enough energy to
be intimate with his spouse at a moment's
notice.

Vapor Plugs - They Work!

Last week it was the boys with the flu- Luckily Tad & I didn't catch it. This week I have another cold. I think we're on a record for germs this season. We've never been this sick before. So after a few restless nights, I decided to use the pedia care vapor plug we put in the boy's room whenever they are sick. It was wonderful. Although I still couldn't smell the strong vapors (Tad did), I had a great night sleep w/o needing even one kleenex between bedtime and morning. So I woke up this morning, deciding I had a goofy post to include on the blog- Vapor Plugs- They work!

We're finally on to something...maybe?

I shouldn't even jinx myself by putting this in writing but the boys may finally be on to something. For the past 2 days during naptime or bedtime they get into their beds, laydown, we stay there. Yes this is a huge step from where we've been ever since we switched to toddler beds. I guess the novelty of running back and forth to each other's bed is finally wearing off. So for the time being, I am getting some time back during the day and we are saving ourselves an hour or so in the evenings from "laying down" in their room. We are thankful for this.

Tad's work is full speed ahead now that January is here. The trial is scheduled for Feb. 4th. They are already working 7 days a week and most of those are well into the evening. The trial should last about 6 weeks so it looks like we'll get him back on a regular schedule come March. We're getting use to long days without him home at supper time. I don't know how prosecutors do it year round. I'm hopeful a case like this won't come across Tad's desk again for a while. I think he is too. Tonight we're going to meet our friends Amy & Ellie for dinner. It will do us some good to get out. Amy's husband works late at his store on Tues. so it works out well.

I'm working on blogging about the holidays. I uploaded all the pictures we took and I realized that my sister took most of them with her camera. She is burning me a cd so I can have copies too. We did get some snow before my sister's family went back to Florida. This was the first snow we actually let the boys go outside for. We figured they didn't know what they were missing. Well they loved it! They kept making snow angels- they learned that from a Max & Ruby video and now they still "pretend" to make them on the kitchen floor. Here are a few outside pictures.

Well once again I find myself doing a "summary" of the past events. This time that summary would have to include 2 busy months of travel, visitors, weeks of sickness (all of us) and birthday celebrations. For that reason I'll just start with the most recent as I've promised to get more updated photos of the boys on here. This past Wed. Dec. 12, the boys turned 2 years old. It still blows our mind that we have already had Connor & Peyton for 2 years. The time goes so fast, but we can still vividly remember so many things from the beginning and I hope that never changes.

The boys are so much fun these days. Most recently they tried (for the first time we know about) and succeed to climb out of the crib. So during what was "naptime", I found Peyton standing at the top of the stairs (and my heart sitting on my feet) when I looked up in disbelief. It was a very surreal moment b/c I had not heard even as much as a thump. That prompted us to do a quick change over that night to toddler beds. The past 2-3 weeks have been a new training session trying to get the boys to STAY in their beds. They LOVE to run back and forth to each others bed and turn their room into a circus. Last night at 4 am we heard Connor on the monitor wide awake in Peyton's bed w/ Peyton telling him to wake up. It is fun in the mornings to listen to them. Peyton is usually the first one awake and he crawls in Connor's bed, starts singing songs, and eventually starts telling him to wake up. Then they both start running between beds, looking out the window, and giggling over anything.

For their birthday we just had my parents over for dinner and I made the kids a Winnie the Pooh cake. Last night we took them to see a Winnie the Pooh play at a Children's theatre downtown my mom got us tickets to. They LOVED it. It kept their attention the whole 50 min. They also got to meet the characters after the show and their eyes were so wide with excitement. It was as much fun to watch the boys as it was the play.

This weekend we are snowed in. We took an early xmas present from my mom (snowboots) for the boys and are hoping to get the boys outside tomorrow. This will be their first time to play in the snow. Last year we decided to not let them know what they are missing. Their absolute favorite DVD right now is Frosty The Snowman. They call it "mo man" and ask to watch it at least 4 times a day (they don't). Anyway we'll try to build a "mo man" and see what they think.

We're also finally all healthy. Someone has been sick here since our Thanksgiving travels. We're anxious for family to arrive for the holidays. We traveled for Thanksgiving and saw the other half (I'll post our travels later). Our Christmas card is still in the works but they will be mailed soon (hopefully).

A quick catch-up

It has been a month since I posted anything. We've kept very busy this fall. We had family come twice from Missouri, twice from Texas, friends from Texas, and now Tad's parents are coming this weekend from Missouri. We LOVE IT!!! It sure makes my weeks go quick. We were so excited the Neely's joined us for lunch and a day at the zoo. I still have to get the pictures from Leslie to post. Her children are adorable and Houston is such a great baby.

Just a few updates. The judge just ruled on Tad's case he's working on. The defense got the continuance they wanted for after the first of the year. I'm not sure how the rest of the gov't feels about it but personally I'm glad b/c that means we're able to make Harding's Homecoming in Nov. I"m so excited to take the boys and see everyone. Tad is tentatively scheduled to speak to the Criminal Justice classes Friday morning at 8:00 & 10:00 so we'll be in Searcy Thurs. pm. Unfortunatly he can't take off work on the Monday following so we'll have to leave early Sunday morning at the latest. We haven't really had a chance to talk about our travels yet.

I had my first Southern Living at Home party and it went really well. I loved hosting it and having so many girls over and it was nice to make some extra money too plus get some free products. I have 2 more already scheduled for Oct. Tad went out of town for the whole week. When he left Sunday I came down with a sinus infection and the boys have colds too. It's been just peachy around here. My mom was kind enough to take off work Monday to stay with the boys so I could just sleep. The z-pack is kicking in and I"m feeling better- which is good b/c Tad gets back Friday morning and his parents come Friday night. Plenty to still get done.

Our leaves have started to fall- It has been so warm it doesn't even seem like that time of year. Anyone that has been in our backyard knows we have more than our share of leaves to pick up each year. We actually enjoy doing it but it takes a lot of time. The boys new favorite thing is to fill the trunks of their Little Tikes Bubble car with leaves, scoop them out, and start all over again. They LOVE being outside. Also, Connor started singing his first song. If you start "where is connor" to the tune Where is Thumbkin, he will finish on tune "here i am". Peyton hums along but prefers to dance along instead. They both LOVE music.

So I better get something put together for dinner. We're out of left overs and I'm actually looking at cooking for the first time this week. Let us know if you're coming to Harding's Homecoming. We'd love to see everyone.

A New Job

Well I did it! After months of going back and forth on the idea, I decided to sign up to become a consultant for Southern Living at Home. My sister in law first introduced me to the products a few years back and I fell in love with so many of the items. Slowly I've been buying them but there are many more I love. So, after talking to her a little about it, I decided selling it would help me get those things I love as well as provide an outlet for ME. I really enjoyed teaching and I'm thankful we are in a position I can stay home with the boys, but it has been a hard transition. I miss that "career" piece in my life. This is perfect b/c it lets me work around any schedule I want, but also lets me get out some evenings and take a break for adult conversation with other women. I am really excited about this,,,,but also nervous b/c it is new. I added a link to my website if you want to check out the products or even just learn about the company. We'll see how it goes. Wow- a fast summer

Hi blogger friends. It seems lately the time I spent blogging has gone to preparing for & spending time with company. We were blessed this summer to have many of our friends and family come through town. This worked out great because with Tad's case he's working on, we didn't have a chance to get away on vacation. Tad's brother Chuck & his family were here last week with us. Unfortunately we had some rainy days that kept us inside for the most part, but we were able to do the indoor pool, tour a chocolate factory, and a 1/2 day at the zoo. My brother came home again this past week for the Labor Day holiday and then we all are going to my grandparents on the weekend to see my aunt & uncle from Arkansas. Early next week Tad's other brother Clark will be coming to Columbus on business for several days so we look forward to visiting with him next.

A couple weekends ago I decided I would brave taking the boys by myself for a roadtrip to Cincinnati. It was only 2 hours away and I had made plans to meet up with some fun girls I went to grad school with . Katie was in from Chicago, and Brandi and Lisa both live there. The boys traveled great on the way down. We met everyone for lunch at Max & Erma's and then went to Lisa's house for more visiting. Well, that visit got cut short, b/c Peyton got sick as soon as we got back to her house. Within min. I realized he now had a fever and Lisa & I were quick to find the pharmacy for motrin. After medication, I decided it would be best if I started to drive home. I was thinking if we could make it home while they napped it would be alright. Well about 45 min. from home I called Tad to let him know things were good and the boys were still sleeping. 5 min. later, Peyton wakes up and begins vomitting in his carseat. I"m freaking out driving on the interstate with no one to help me. I pull over at the next exit to get him cleaned up, Connor starts crying only b/c Peyton is crying. So, it is time for a blue's clues dvd. That did the trick, although Peyton got sick again before we got home. He had this wierd bug that kept him sick and feverish until that evening and then was fine by morning. All in all it was a decent trip(flu bug considered). I loved seeing the girls and Brandi's boy Elliot. If only Peyton didn't cut our time short. It built my confidence that I could take them that far away alone and even handle sickness. Tad spent the day painting our kitchen red. It is almost finished and we love it.

Both boys came down with an ear infection this past week so they are now getting over that. Tad is in Florida on business for a couple days. I"m enjoying time with my brother and hoping the weather begins to cool down so we can get outside again. We still don't know about Harding's Homecoming. The judge was to rule on the continuance motion filed by the defense last week or so but didn't. We'll see what happens. I remain hopeful.

Hope you all are enjoying the last few days of summer. Our schools just started back this week so I lost some of my teacher friends again during the day. Buckeye football starts Saturday! Go Buckeyes!!!

August: A new look

There are many projects around the house we've wanted to do since we moved in 2 years ago. Slowly we are crossing them off our list. Earlier this summer we changed the look of our house by painting our shutters from brown to black. We also got rid of an ugly rust color front door and painted it black too. Now our house is cream, lt. tan, and black. (I'll work on getting an updated picture). We also repainted our foyer changing it from mustard yellow to cream. That brings us to our most recent project- painting our family room. It has been a challenge to dive into it b/c being the central room of our house we struggle with moving furniture around as well as painting the vaulted walls especially along the stairs. Tad bought a Little Giant ladder a while ago at a home show and although quite expensive it is quite handy. In fact that is how we did the shutters ourselves. So now we have this room 1/2 completed. We are down to basically what the ladder will require. It already looks much cozier. We had builders white on the walls before and now they are taupe.

Last weekend I found the fabric for our kitchen curtains and I'm already getting excited about moving to the kitchen next. It will be painted red. It is funny how you get the bug to start all these things and it just seems like you can't get to them as fast as you want to. It will be nice to get rid of all these colors from the previous owners. For those of you who have been here- the monkey wallpaper in the guest bath is also slated to come down in the near future.

We have a lot of family cycling back through here again at the end of August and beginning of September so we are trying to make the most of these next few weekends. Oh and for those of you wondering..yes the deer head is coming down. It is a sad day for that Deer b/c it is making a permanent trip to the basement wall and we will be putting up an array of picture frames in its place. Super excited!!! No really, I didn't mind it but it is time for a change. I'll start taking some pictures to post when the rooms get done.

Oh and Tad just called with news about the trial. The judge said today he would rule by next Wed. if he would grant the continuance so those of you thinking about Harding's Homecoming..it is getting more probable we could make it. We are still searching for a room in Searcy though and might end up in Little Rock. We are hopeful to see many of you. Who's thinking about going? Let us know.

July : Family & Fun

The month of July flew by since we had family in town all but 3 days. My sister and her girls came and stayed 3 weeks. We spent that time at the pool, the zoo (a couple times), library story hour (the boys first time), the splash park, a family reunion, the backyard, and celebrating my sister's birthday.
